It took among us the most innocent one
To see where our lives had begun;
To go to the gutter, where we have all our fun,
Where none of us ever could be.
We cried and we laughed, for all of the night,
We said "Shit, we can't even fight.
For all we know, we'll never be right";
I always hoped she would see...

So many truths hiding behind lies,
I guess we forgot our ignorant side
Don't have easy-to-read signs;
But that's not a big enough mistake.
The nights roll around, and the endings are near,
Who all dares to show their face here?
Forever lost in our glossy veneer;
I hope there's a big enough stake.

And here she walks in, gazes around;
Whispers so low, they make hardly a sound,
They float above the pride on the ground,
A discarded accessory for today.
And he follows her hips with eyes meeting not,
Never could admit that he's been bought,
Better pass another round of shots;
Gotta be drunk-on-the-way.

The circles grow larger as people get smaller,
Words get exchanged, while glasses get taller,
And at one point he thought, why even bother?
We all lose our chances sometime.
Now they're dancing, laughing, having a blast,
The music is drowning out everyone's past;
This night among nights that never last,
How did we find ourselves among the sublime?

A boyfriend sits in the corner, taken tonight,
I'll bet his mind's on the possibilities of flight;
His eyes are vultures, scanning the sights,
Looking everywhere but the gem in his lap.
She sits there, so pretty, smiling in love,
Glares are all staring from the viewpoint above,
Something about them gives the wrong tug;
One of these days, they're going to snap.

And round and round, our woes do go,
Everyone's got a rehearsal to show,
(But we can't all have talent, you know);
I hope the fall just looks hard.
One by one, down goes the lot,
Every line spoken has just gotten caught,
A tongue-tied twister in a drunken spot.
I guess the fall is far...

Far across the room, and fair as can be,
This beautiful girl, as red as the leaves,
Has hidden the truths from but a few like me;
It's all a romantic play.
The prince and the pauper, oh what a choice,
Please listen to that little old voice,
You can't always dance with all of the boys;
I don't think it's ending today.

I thought we all had some integrity inside,
But I guess that's just something to pass the time;
Believing in my own two-dimensional lies,
It's the only thing that lets me live.
It took among us the most innocent one,
To pour out the truth in a beautiful song,
To show the end of what we begun;
He's always the first to forgive...

custodianofanarchy: Wow, this is really a masterpiece. There are so many subliminal truths packed into this...it is an iron dense poem for certain...this has impressed the hell out of me. The imagery is brilliant, you have managed to tap into some very complex concepts here, but you have found the pefect balance for them: easily understood but nuanced, intricate but not pretentious, and simple but amazingly deep. GREAT job, a 10.
